Diocesan Assembly

LITURGICAL MUSIC

presented by Fr. John Shimchick (frjs@aol.com)

The Liturgical Music Commission: 1) organizes annual workshops in each deanery; 2) seeks, whenever possible, to distribute music and information from these sessions to all diocesan choir directors; 3) publishes articles on liturgical music in Jacob=s Well. It does not have a fixed membership, but welcomes the suggestions and encourages the mutual support of everyone in our Diocese interested in liturgical music.

Over the past year the following workshops have taken place:

  • October 23, 1999: Professor David Drillock, ASing Praises to the Lord,@ at Dormition of the Holy Virgin Church, Binghamton, NY
  • November 6, 1999: Professor David Drillock, AThe Fundamentals of Orthodox Liturgical Music,@ at SS Peter and Paul Church, Manville, NJ
  • February 12, 2000: Mark Bailey, AVocal Technique and Musical Awareness in Orthodox Church Singing," at Christ the Saviour Church, Paramus, NJ

PUBLIC RELATIONS/JACOB'S WELL

The goal of Jacob=s Well since its inception has been to develop the scriptural image of the well as a gathering place for local news and as a place for the encounter with Jesus Christ. Our next issue, which should be finished in January, will examine the scriptural/liturgical expression of Alife-creating.@

We have tried to complement our published material and improve the timeliness of Diocesan news by developing a diocesan webpage: JacWell.org

Here, as the copy on the back of this page shows, it is possible to find:

  • a History of our Diocese and information on every Diocesan parish (from the OCA=s webpage).
  • a Calendar of Diocesan events, which can easily be linked to additional materials (posters, etc.)
  • Articles by Archbishop PETER
  • Articles from past issues, located from the AArchives@ side button according to chronology or themes. The last three issues (with pictures) can be downloaded in their entirety as an AAcrobat@ file. Newly added materials are identified in the AWhat=s New@ section.
  • The ASupplements@ section includes longer material (articles, chapters from books that have been reviewed, etc.) than could be included in an issue, as well as items that further develop a theme.

Over the next year, the following things will be encouraged:

  • adding color pictures from each parish to our website, featuring each picture initially on the home page and then making them all available in a separate section. Please start sending these pictures to me.
  • establishing Asister@ relationships with each Diocese in the OCA and the editor of their publication, trying to solicit articles on their diocesan history and life
